Classic Chevrolet Cars

There are few material things in life that are as priceless as an American classic car, specifically, the Chevrolet.

Invented in the early 1900s, the original Chevrolets — whose namesake, Louis Chevrolet was actually a race car driver for the Buick brand — were envisioned as being manufactured for the wealthy, this is evidenced by the introduction of the “Classic Six”, one of Chevrolet’s earliest models that also had a whopping price tag of over $2000 — a significant price for that day and age, and one very few people could actually afford.

It was also because of this difference in the idea for the vision of the company that the partnership of Louis Chevrolet and William Durant — the founder of General Motors and the one who hired Mr. Chevrolet to drive the Buick vehicles in promotional races — went their separate ways. This bit of history is often included in the story told by those selling classic cars, as it helps illustrate the richness and uniqueness of the Chevrolet brand.

As the years progressed, Mr. Durant continued to compete with Ford and Dodge by introducing automobiles with advancements in engine and body innovation and creativity that ultimately laid the groundwork for the Chevrolet models to surge in popularity.

For instance, the Chevrolet Corvette; arguably one of the most sought after for those buying and selling classic cars. Introduced in 1953, this car has been a mainstay in the antique automobile industry — and is also still in production today — and with such inventive ideas as using fiberglass for the body to make the car faster and more aerodynamic, it is the end all, be all in the classic car market. Few cars hold this distinction: the Ford Mustang is one, and the Chevrolet Camaro is also one.

It is no surprise that Chevrolet is the top car to typically be found in the classic car circles; given the engineering masterpieces that were the engines, which is actually the same kind — the Chevrolet small block V-8, today as was introduced so many decades ago — and the beauty and craftsmanship of the car body itself.

Also, because Chevrolet is still built with the same passion from yesteryear, it is likely to continue to be among the top car for those buying and selling classic cars for many years to come.

Fiat is Pleased With US Dealerships

Fiat SpA announced that their relationship with US dealerships is very fruitful and sales are exceeding expectations. Fiat took over management control of Chrysler Group LLC last year and thought that European cars will not sell well after the decision to remove purchase incentives. The European experience showed that the demand decreased after the incentive system was removed, followed by an increase in the long term.

The partnership meant Fiat putting cash into Chrysler and would retool a Chrysler plant to produce Fiat models to be sold in the US. Fiat also provided engine and transmission technology that could allow the introduction of new and fuel-efficient small cars. At a time when larger and more global rivals such as Toyota, Volkswagen and Renault-Nissan are competing on the market, Fiat and Chrysler are uniting their efforts to become a viable competitor.

A year before, Chrysler sold only in North America, while Fiat was heavily dependent on European sales, the home market, Italy being the most important one. Development of new vehicles was heavily reduced as Chrysler was struggling to survive the economic crisis. Fiat, on the other hand had difficulties to survive as an independent manufacturer of small cars, which have small profit margins.

The Chrysler Fiat alliance has helped Chrysler exit bankruptcy in 2009 and the new partnership was hoped to lead to making and selling small and fuel-efficient cars all over the world. The impact on Chrysler which depended largely on Jeeps, pickups and minivans was significant. Small Fiats would be sold at Chrysler dealers, but adjustments had to be made in order to adapt the cars to the emissions and safety requirements in the United States. Fiat based compact cars were initially scheduled for 2012, but they were moved earlier to the last quarter of 2011. They are meant to fill the small car gap in Chrysler’s line.

Run by Fiat, Chrysler hopes to have better sales in the last part of 2010, sales that would be boosted by the Americanized version of Cinquecento, or Fiat 500. The focus changed on smaller cars is part of Chrysler’s efforts to improve its position. Among the several small models under development, the first one to hit the market has the Fiat badge attached to it. An electric version of the Fiat 500 is expected in American showrooms in 2012. The concept car with an electric drivetrain was introduced at the Detroit auto show in January. Although the car will have a Fiat nameplate, the engineering of the car will be done in Michigan and the car will be built specifically for the United States. However, the electric car will come one year behind Nissan Leaf, Chevrolet Volt and the electric Ford Focus.

The Fiat management announced that Chrysler will build more than 50,000 cars each year until 2014, and Fiat 500 will be a small and lightweight platform that could fit the electric vehicle technology. The electric Fiat 500 will follow a conventional gasoline powered model, arriving in the US at the end of 2010.

How to Decide What Car to Restore

This is kind of a tricky question, but it’s a question that I get all of the time, there is no definite answer to it, you need to ask yourself a few questions to begin with, the first question that you need to ask yourself, is what am I going to do with the car?

Make yourself a list of the things that you plan to do with the car, put the list in order of priority, in other words put the things that are most important at the top of the list, and as you complete each one mark it off so you know where you’re at.

Next you need to look at the cars that you think that you’d like to restore, and do the same thing here, put make a list and put your favorite one at the top, and work in order of importance to you, which car do you like the best.

Then if this is your first restoration you should look at the difficulty level of the particular car that you choose, take your list of favorites and figure out which ones that you can get that are in decent shape, you should start with one that is not a rust pit.

After you have determined witch one is in the best condition, you’ll need to look at the parts situation, how easy is it to get the parts, parts are one of those things that can take a long time to find, if you have a lot of patience then it OK to take a lot of time looking for parts.

If your restoring a muscle car I will give a few ideas on the easiest ones to get parts for here, first you’d want to look at how many were made, in which case you’d look at the Ford mustang, they built more mustangs than any other muscle car ever built.

Obviously the more they build, the easier it’s going to be to get parts for them, if your a fan of the mustang it may be a good idea to build one of them, you’ll enjoy the restoration process, and you’ll be able to find most of the parts that you’ll need.

Don’t get me wrong here, it can still be hard to find some of the parts that you’ll need to restore a mustang, this all depends on which mustang you choose to restore, there are a lot of different mustangs, and some parts can be hard to find, but usually they are available to you.

If the mustang is not quite your idea of a great muscle car to restore, maybe your looking at a Chevrolet, if your a Chevrolet person then you should be looking the the direction of the Camaro, Chevrolet built a lot of Camaros, and parts are usually easy to get.

But like the mustang there are certain one that are hard to get some of the parts for, if you decide to restore a 1969 ZL1 to original, the obvious problem is going to be to find the all aluminum 427 engine for the car, being as how they only built 69 of these cars.

Your next step in the world of Chevrolet would be a Chevelle, this is another car that Chevrolet built a lot of, and you should be able to find a good car to start with, but like the two cars above there are some parts that can be very hard to find, and hard to find also means expensive.

The people that deal in hard to find parts know, if your calling then it’s because you can’t locate the parts you need for any other source, and they will charge accordingly, and no this is not a rip off, it’s people that seen it coming and took advantage of it.

All I’m saying here is simply this, the restoration is supposed to be fun, it’s supposed to be something that you can enjoy, rather you do it yourself, or have a shop do it for you, if you get all of your ducks in a row it will be fun, but you need to know, there is always frustration involved.

If you realize up front that no matter how well you plan it thing will happen, you can have the fun of restoring your car, along with being able to finish the job, if you get upset at something, take a break, there is nothing making you keep going.

I’ll say it again, the main thing is that you have fun restoring your car, and the next thing in line is that you complete the restoration of your car, this will make all the work worth it, remember that about thirty percent of the car get sold before their done.

It doesn’t have to be that way with your car, make yourself the exception to the rule, have fun restoring your car, realize that it won’t be done over night, and rather then getting mad at the car, take as many breaks as you need, and above all have fun.

57 Chevy – An American Classic

When the 1957 Bel Air went on sale, nobody – not even Chevrolet – expected to make history. Instead, it became one of the landmark images in American pop culture; one of the most recognizable cars the world has ever known.

Today, automakers still hail the 57 Chevy as a perfect example of good design and great timing coming together.

What we call the 57 Chevy was actually 19 distinct models. All 19 models were based on a single frame or platform, the basic structure of the car. The 1957 models were the final year in that frame’s life. It had been the backbone for Chevrolet’s model line for the 55, 56 and 57 model years. The only other car Chevrolet sold then was the Corvette.

Ford and Chrysler had all new frames and styling for their 57 models. They should have mopped the floor with the aged GM model, but Chevrolet outsold Ford by 126 cars in 1957. It sold 1,522,536 units of the various 57 Chevy models and 6,339 Corvettes.

The best-selling 1957 model was the Two-Ten four-door sedan, with a base price of $2,174.00. The least expensive was the $1,885.00 One-Fifty Utility two-door sedan. The most expensive 1957 model was the Bel Air Nomad two-door station wagon with a $2,757.00 base price. It was Chevrolet’s lowest-selling model. Chevrolet sold just 6,103 Nomads that year, trailing the Corvette by 236 sales.

Some of the options for that year included, seat belts and a racing-style over-the-shoulder security harness. Other options included a tissue dispenser, electric razor, wheel spinners, backup lights and a gas filter. The cars came in 16 solid colors and 15 two-tone combinations.

Many 57 Chevy’s featured a prism on the dashboard. It was intended to refract light from traffic signals so the driver could tell when the light changed without learning forward under the nearly vertical windshield.

The cars came with a choice of seven engines; a standard 235.5 cubic-inch 140-hp straight-six; 162-hp 265 cubic-inch V8, and eight versions of the 283 cubic-inch V8 with power ranging from 185 to 283 horsepower. The 57 Chevy was the first American car with fuel injection. The optional 283 cubic-inch fuel-injected V8 produced 283 horsepower. It was the second American engine to develop one horsepower per cubic inch of displacement, coming a year after the 355-hp 354 cubic-inch Chrysler Hemi.

Ten assembly plants built the 57 Chevy Family: Atlanta, Baltimore; Flint; Janesville, Wis.; Kansas City, Mo.; Los Angeles; Norwood, Ohio; Oakland, Calif., St. Louis, and Tarrytown, N.Y.

Many designers and car enthusiasts say they believe the 1955 Chevy was the best looking model, but the 57 model year brought more defined tailfins, bullet-shaped bumper protectors, bombsight hood ornaments and other elements that gave the bargain-priced Chevrolet just enough zing to grab buyers’ fancy.

The 57 Chevy had style, the buzz born of racing success and demographics on their side. They hit the used-car market just as early baby boomers got driver’s licenses and went looking for affordable wheels.

The 57 Chevy embodied the spirit of Chevrolet, great looking, groundbreaking and affordable.

Sep 2006 Did General Motors deliberately sabotage the marketing of electric cars because they threatened the motor industry? That’s the allegation made in a controversial new documentary. Ten years ago, GM unveiled the EV1 — the first electric car for the mass market. “The EV1 was really special because it was cool and fast and fun to drive,” states former GM marketer Chelsea Sexton. “These cars were so good, they would challenge the status quo of the oil industry.” But despite their popularity among owners, GM quickly pulled the plug on its new product. It claims there was simply no mass market. “You could only go 100 miles before you had to recharge it so had to adapt your lifestyle to meet the needs of the vehicle,” states spokesman Dave Barthmuss. But other workers believe GM never intended the EV1s to work and were more interested in promoting Hummers. “We got indications along the way that they weren’t as sincere as they would have people believe,” states Sexton. All the EV1s had been leased, instead of sold, to their owners. When the leases expired, GM refused to renew them and sent the cars to be crushed. But demand for electric cars keeps on growing.
